Michael R. Roskam was selected to direct Racer and the Jailbird in 2012 and was later joined by Matthias Schoenaerts to take up the main role. In 2015, Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré were selected to write the script in conjunction with Roskam. The film was then intended to be produced by Bart Van Langendonck and its filming was to begin in 2014. However, shooting began in 2016 after Adèle Exarchopoulos came on board.
